Another Busy Saturday
For the second week in a row, we were toned out for a car accident during Saturday drills. 3 of the 4 refused transport and the 4th was not critical… But Jodi got to drive the Rescue code 3 again!

We usually average less than 1 call per day and last month was even slower with only 10 calls total in September. So 3 calls in one day makes for quite the event! Several of us showed up for training Saturday, which spotaneously turned into a group breakfast when a few decided to cook up the remaining pancakes and eggs from the recent Hunter’s Breakfast.
Just as we were finishing up, a call toned out for an unknow car accident. We had enough to respond with a full crew on the Rescue and Engine 125. A single vehicle drove into one of the deep ditches alongside highway 211. Although the passenger originally refused transport, we convinced him to go to the hospital via ambulance when he coulnd’t remember if he lost consciouness due to the imapct (the SUV was totaled).
As we got back to the station and finished cleaning up from breakfast, Molalla toned out for a residential fire. Our Water Tender responded before any of the Molalla units were on the air and the rest of us waited for the Molalla duty officer to get on scene and confirm the fire. Sure enough, within minutes, CCom sent out working tones for a confirmed fire and called units from Colton, Canby, and Clackamas. We responded on Engine 125 with two additional firefighters, with the original assignment of responding to Molalla’s station as back up. Just as we entered Molalla, we were instructed to respond directly to the fire as they needed additional manpower. On scene, we found the house almost completely engulfed and attacked from the outside in crews of two.
We assisted for a little over 3 hours then returned to the station. And, just as we were finished cleaning up the engines, we got another call for difficulty breathing! Again, we had a full crew for the Rescue, responding with 4 EMTs and a paramedic. On the way to the scene, the paramedic indicated that Jodi would lead patient care, so she handed out assignments to the reamining crew and took the lead once with the patient.
We finally left the station at 6pm – that’s a full day for the volunteer fire department!
Here are picgtures of the residential fire from the Pioneer:
As the rain and frost start to settle in, we needed to pick the last of our corn, tomatoes, and squash. Freezing most of the corn to enjoy over the winter, we had a pretty good crop this year!
We stopped by Kent & Miranda’s and found Miranda harvesting her honey also!
Trailer Choir performed at Duke’s last night and they were very entertaining – Big Vinny’s pop worm can’t be beat! Unfortunatly while at the concert we missed the biggest accident in Colton all year – car versus 2 pedestrians.
Yesterday Jodi took the rescue out for a spin on her first Code-3 (lights and sirens) call! About 9:30 Friday night we received a call for a patient with breathing difficulty at the Colton High School. We responded and Jodi drove the rescue to the scene. The football game had just let out so there were cars and people everywhere, but she did a great job of navigating through the crowds and obsticals and got the rescue right out on the football field near the patient.
When we arrived we found that a football player had taken an elbow to his throat and appeared to have trauma to the larynx. He was having extreme difficulty breathing and needed immediate help. We started airway management and began cutting off his clothing and pads. Since our regular ambulance was on another call and the backup was coming from Portland we decided to get a Lifeflight helicopter on the way. We ended up landing the helicopter right next to us on the football field and got the patient on the way.
Jodi did a great job of getting us to the scene. Here is a recording of the dispatch tones… Colton Football Breathing Difficulty Dispatch
