Tonight we attended the 95th annual meeting of the Colton Phone Company Co-Op, now called ColtonTel. Here are the highlights:
Two members in particular were highly perturbed with the 2006 financial results. Apparently there is much debate over the Colton telephone company’s recent purchase of a four-plex in downtown Colton (300 phone service subscribers). In order to receive the most value for their investment, the phone company evicted the four tenants, one of which was a Colton volunteer fire fighter. Some argued that the phone company owes it to Colton residents to subsidize this housing for its residents since there are very few low income housing options in Colton.
One member, Cliff, expressed his concerns regarding a board member’s frequent absences from board meetings and events. According to the board president the absences were excused; one was work related and the other was spent out chasing escaped cows.
The Fire Chief, Gary, concluded the annual meeting with some very positive complements, stressing the friendliness of service, availability of staff, and quick response of after-hours technicians.
One the meeting adjourned, the fun began! The first door prize, a De Walt bit set, went to Tom. One of the board members, also our mailman, yelled out, “Now you can fix that mail box of yours!”
